Today, we have available a wide and sometimes bewildering array of means of communication that are instruments to get the message out. The message itself, however, is a deeply personal reality: faith speaking to faith. In our quest to utilize the best contemporary means of communication, we can never forget the necessary and irreplaceable human mediation needed to proclaim the Word of God. We can detect this in the phrase from St. Thomas Aquinas adopted as the motto of the Dominican order and as the description of preaching in the Second Vatican Council: contemplata aliis tradere, to hand on to others what we ourselves have contemplated. Operative examples of this come to us through the First Letter of John and St. Augustine’s commentary on that letter. It is also present in St. Paul. A digital platform can never replace a transformed heart in proclaiming the Good News.
