“Woe to you hypocrites!” Jesus warns in the Gospel of Matthew. He was talking to scribes and Pharisees but his concerns extend to social media influencers. The original meaning of the word “hypocrite,” means “pretense,” and social media allows pretensions to be more effective, and dangerous, than in real life. The Church’s moral framework of the Seven Deadly Sins is also useful in spotting the dangers in becoming a social media influencer. In the end, can social media influencing be a genuine method of evangelization?
