RESOURCE 2026 – Michael Murphy

.

The rich intellectual and social teaching traditions that constitute Catholic thought and practice, coupled with the edifying forms of sacramental imagination and liturgical participation so central to the tradition, are uniquely suited to address the moral, spiritual, and cultural juggernaut of digital culture and emergent AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).  However, as urgent as it is for the church, as an “expert in humanity,” to assert its wisdom on these questions with prudence, we must also proceed with clear practices of intellectual and pastoral realism that understand the rich innovations in play.  The rise of technological tools is not, in the end, a clash between incompatible worlds, but rather presents opportunities for providing the needed wisdom that is too often missing in these discussions—especially at the level of industry. In this sense, the course of action is to be found in “discernment” (i.e., the Ignatian option) as opposed to “retreat” (i.e., the “Benedict Option”). The essential role of the Church in the face of hyperactive technological advancement is to do what it does best: promote and safeguard the dignity of the person.
