It is important for the Church to consider social communication (including digital communication) as having ministerial capacity, and to form ministers with this in mind. While the cautions about digital media raised in formation documents remain important (ex: pornography, gambling, addiction), I propose rounding out the cautions with a constructive formation that emphasizes essential spiritual dispositions to foster in the digital age, especially toward a sound ministerial approach. Among these spiritual dispositions, I include: the importance and precedence of listening; the essentially life-giving nature of communication; the fruits of the Holy Spirit as discernment points for communication, and communication as a gift of self in love, oriented toward Communion.
